Gramps Web continues to expand its genealogy tools, and the latest release 25.9 introduces a milestone: Y-DNA visualization. For the first time in an open-source genealogy system, you can explore your paternal lineage directly within Gramps Web, and this feature is now live on Grampshub.
The purpose of Grampshub has always been to make it simple for anyone to use Gramps Web without needing to worry about hosting, backups, or server maintenance. But beyond convenience, I also hoped that Grampshub could give something back — that the subscription fees could help fund improvements to Gramps Web itself, supporting the open source project that makes all of this possible.
Gramps 6.0 has been released in March, and with it comes a host of improvements, many of which also benefit Gramps Web. Yesterday, after weeks of work & testing, a new Gramps Web version has been released that is based on Gramps 6.0. Historical geography is closely linked with genealogy — even if we know which places our ancestors lived in, those places might have looked drastically different in different time periods. That’s why it’s exciting that the July 2024 version of Gramps Web brought a major new feature for the map view: integration of OpenHistoricalMap (OHM) as a map layer.
This week, a new version of Gramps, the biggest update in four years, has been released - Gramps 5.2. For Gramps Web, which is built directly on top of Gramps, this represents a significant opportunity as new features will become possible in the future due to these changes.
